Energy drink recommendations often emphasize caffeine concentration of these drinks. However, a new study suggests that the other ingredients are not harmless, and come to reinforce the effects of caffeine on the heart.
This study has just been published in the Journal of american heart association.
Faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure
For this study, 18 healthy adults without any heart disease consumed either two cans of one energy drink commercially available, a control drink with the same amount of caffeine, but without the other ingredients.
People who consumed energy drinks had a higher QT interval (the time between two heartbeats) than others.
Likewise, the blood pressure of soda consumers rose first and then returned to normal after 6 hours, while those of energy drink consumers were still too high after 6 hours.
“What our study indicates is that these drinks have effects on the heart that are different from caffeine alone.”, explains Emily Fletcher, deputy commander of the medical center at Travis Air Force Base in California. “Consumers, especially those with heart disease or high blood pressure, should know that drinking an energy drink is not the same as drinking coffee or a can of caffeinated soda.”.
