This is how we react to different types of alcohol.
Wine and beer make you feel more relaxed, while stronger spirits increase feelings of self-confidence and the feeling of being sexy and attractive. These are the results of a study published in the journal BMJ, the aim of which was to understand which emotions are linked to the different types of alcohol consumed.
Aggression, nervousness, sadness
Of nearly 90,000 participants from around the world surveyed over a 12-month period, more than half associate the consumption of spirits (alcoholic beverages obtained after distillation such as vodka, rum or whiskey) with a boost in energy and of confidence in them. About 42% of them also reported that drinking hard liquor made them feel sexier.
For red wine, the emotions reported were more like relaxation for about 53% of the participants, even if it is also alcohol that makes you feel tired (for 60% of the participants). Same positive effect for beer: almost half say they feel relaxed after drinking it. More so than red wine and beer, spirits are more likely to trigger negative behavioral effects such as aggression, nervousness, and sadness.
Women and young people more susceptible to the effects of alcohol
The study also shows that women are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol, whether positive or negative, with stronger emotional responses. However, men are more prone to outbursts of aggression, especially for men who drink heavily.
For 18-24 year olds, sensitivity to the effects of alcohol is also higher, except for feelings of aggressiveness and fatigue, which are equal in all the age groups observed. However, the study insists on the danger that alcohol consumption represents for health. It is responsible for 3.3 million deaths per year worldwide in 2014. There are also many studies on the negative impact of certain individuals’ alcohol consumption on their loved ones and the communities in which they live. Even consumed in moderation, alcohol remains dangerous for health.
