After analyzing the health insurance records of more than 8 million Austrians, researchers at the Vienna Faculty of Medicine found that prescriptions for anti-allergy drugs (also called antihistamines) were on the rise in patients prescribed anti-acid drugs. Scientists believe that disturbing the balance of the stomach with medication for reflux or gastric acidity also upsets the immune system, arousing allergies that did not exist in the patient.
The sterilizing function of the stomach is impaired
“We have to be aware that the stomach has an important digestive function and a kind of sterilizing function,” said Dr Erika Jensen-Jarolim, lead author of the study published in Nature communications. “When you take antacids, this function is impaired. And our immune system can see denatured foods as a threat.
