Unemployment is associated with a 50% higher risk of death in heart failure patients, according to rresults of a study published in the medical journal Heart Failure.
Researchers at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) conducted a study with 20,000 heart failure patients and found that being unemployed was linked to a greater likelihood of death than being unemployed. diabetes or a history ofstroke. The researchers compared the risks of death from all causes in patients with heart failure, depending on whether they were working or not.
Of the 21,455 patients hospitalized for the first time with heart failure, 11,880 (55%) were working class.
During an average follow-up of 1,005 days, 16% of employees and 31% of the unemployed died, while 40% of employees and 42% of the unemployed were re-hospitalized for heart failure.
Work, a value to be taken into account medically
The results of the study showed that patients suffering from insufficiency cardiac unemployed or working class had a 50% increased risk of death and a 12% increased risk of rehospitalization for heart failure compared to those who worked.
“Work is more than a physical measure, because it also has an influence on the quality of life. It has been shown to be important for mental health and well-being. Thus, both from a physical and psychological point of view, it makes sense to include employment in the evaluation of the prognosis of young cardiac patients ”, recalls the main author, Dr. Rasmus Roerth, doctor at the University Hospital of Copenhagen (Denmark).
