That’s bad luck, virtual monkey gone. Several members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club have been robbed in an Instagram hack that looted $2.5 million in NFTs.
Admittedly, the undersigned still has some trouble with the whole NFT circus. How it works exactly, what exactly it means and how this fits into the whole metaverse picture, it’s all still a bit new. However, there has been plenty to do about one of the original NFT collections: Bored Ape Yacht Club.
Bored Ape Yacht Club
For those whose memory needs a refresh: the Bored Ape Yacht Club is a series of NFTs that are currently considered one of the most expensive series. You can exchange your cryptocurrency for a monkey, the most expensive and valuable NFT (prices start from around $450,000). Nowadays you can also buy an element of the Bored Ape Kennel Club, which costs ‘only’ around $ 42,000. There is also a new phenomenon called ‘mutants’, who also go for numbers with six digits. In any case, there is plenty to spend on the BAYC, but an important aspect is that these mutants and kennels became available for free to people who had already bought a monkey. It became clear that promising things for free can also be painful.
Instagram hack
BAYC’s Instagram account has been hacked. It allowed Bored Ape NFT owners to give their goodies to the hackers on a silver platter. According to the account, which BAYC members believed to be real, free tracts of land were being handed out for Otherside, the new Yacht Club metaversion. As always, this was handed out in an Airdrop, which is normal for goodies you receive from BAYC. In this case, the Airdrop resulted in losing your Bored Ape NFTs.
A day later it becomes painfully clear that a number of people have been hit hard by this. Four ‘monkeys’ (worth roughly $1.8 million), six mutants and three kennels were captured, along with a variety of other NFTs. It is estimated that the loot is 2.5 million dollars.
So a big hack. If you own expensive NFTs, know who you are selling them to or, more importantly, giving them away. It can get expensive. The Yacht Club makes every effort to accommodate the affected users.
