Gum care: symptoms to watch out for
Did you know that 50% of dental problems are caused by poorly maintained gums? The key in case of poor oral hygiene: the formation of bacterial plaque and of tartar (formed by the accumulation of bacteria and food debris), lodging on the teeth but also under the gums and causing inflammation, gingivitis and other periodontitis. By loosening them little by little and causing a loss of bone support, these gum disorders can even lead to the loss of teeth in adults.
Whether it’s a gingivitis (local inflammation of the gums) or a periodontitis (deep inflammation that weakens the supporting structure of the tooth), the most important symptoms are bleeding gums and pain, which is more acute in the case of periodontitis. If you have the habit of bleeding when you brush your teeth, if your gums hurt or if they are red and swollen, it is therefore important to consult your dentist quickly in order to establish a diagnosis and carry out any possible necessary treatments.

Gums: how to maintain them on a daily basis?
To take care of your gums and maintain them on a daily basis, certain actions are necessary:
– Brush your teeth after each meal to remove dental plaque and prevent inflammation of the gums (at least twice a day).
– Opt for a soft toothbrush (to glide better between the teeth) and a small head (ideally an electric toothbrush round head). Change it regularly and don’t wait for it to get damaged.
– Choose an antibacterial toothpaste suitable for sensitive gums.
– For effective brushing, clean your teeth from top to bottom (ie starting at the level of the gums and going towards the teeth) and not horizontally.
– Complete your brushing by using dental floss or interdental brushes in order to eliminate dental plaque in inaccessible places with the toothbrush. You can also opt occasionally for a mouthwash to perfect oral hygiene.
– Avoid the consumption of tobacco and alcohol which promote inflammation.
– Have your teeth checked every year (even more regularly if you are pregnant, as pregnancy promotes the process of inflammation of the gums).
Gum care: what about scaling?
Despite regular brushing, dental plaque can persist and turn into tartar over time. Since tartar also promotes oral problems and inflammation of the gums, it is essential to eliminate it regularly. Remember to visit your dentist frequently to have descaling (This will tell you the frequency needed.)
