E. Leclerc is recalling batches of green beans. They would be contaminated by a plant, Datura stramonium, which can cause hepatic, blood and nervous disorders such as hallucinations, or even tachycardia.
Be careful if you are used to buying your green beans frozen at Leclerc. The stores are indeed recalling this product. The green beans concerned are sold frozen in one kilo sachets. It’s about “very fine” beans of the brand Our garden (mark mark of E.Leclerc). They bear the following barcode: 3564700005668 03. Two lots are concerned: lot 8352M, marketed from 20/12/2018, and lot 8031M, marketed from 01/02/2018.
The brand therefore asks its customers to return the bags concerned to the store. Be careful, there is danger even if you have not yet consumed the whole sachet: ingest a small quantity enough for an intoxication. “In case of ingestion, call 15 or quickly consult your doctor”, recommends the sign. A green number has been set up by the manufacturer: 0800 86 52 86 (freephone).
The risks of Datura stramonium, or “devil’s grass”
The plant in question is well known as a poison. Indeed, the Datura is also called “grass of the devil”. This very poisonous plant owes its name to the powerful tropane alkaloids that it contains. If ingested, they can cause various disorders of the central nervous system, digestion, heart or vision. This results in many symptoms, even in small doses: dryness, visual disturbances, hallucinations, disorientation, muscle weakness or even tachychardia (increased heart rate).
Even a small ingestion of this plant can cause contamination. “The symptoms generally require hospitalization,” explains the Ministry of Agriculture on its website.
In general, mild poisoning can last between 8 and 12 hours and more severe poisoning can persist for two to three days. But consumed in high doses, datura can kill. In case of poisoning, emergency hospitalization is therefore strongly required.
