The end of round of negotiations rang in Brussels. The 28 member states of the European Union met in an appeal committee on Monday, November 27 to seal the fate glyphosate for the next years. The suspense has subsided and the conjectures with it. The herbicide will finally be authorized five more years in Europe. Eighteen countries voted in favor of this renewal of the pesticideover this period. Nine voted against (including France) and one abstained. The verdict therefore goes against the French position which pleads for a gradual exit of this herbicide, active ingredient of the Monsanto Round up.
Shortly before knowing the European decision, Brune Poirson, Secretary of State to Nicolas Hulot, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, reaffirmed the government’s opposition in a tweet posted on her account: “Regardless of the outcome of the vote today on #glyphosate – which we will vote against – France is determined to end the use of this substance in less than 5 years “.
France in favor of substitutes
“Glyphosate is a product potentially dangerous“, recalled Brune Poirson on France Info.” We are mobilized with the Ministry of Agriculture to find substitutes for glyphosate. We are not going to leave our farmers by the side of the road, “added the Secretary of State.
Glyphosate is classified carcinogeniclikely by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an organ of the World Health Organization (WHO). The fierce detractors of the herbicide consider that the lack of recognition of its toxicity is linked to intense lobbying on the part of manufacturers like Monsanto. One certainty: this European vote will not sign the end of the controversy around this herbicide.
