Disappearance of sea ice and animal species, melting snow, global warming is already guilty of many evils. But it would also be responsible for the rise in allergies, the multiplication of respiratory diseases and depression. It could undo 50 years of progress in health science.
“Public health is one of the biggest challenges of global warming,” said Professor Anthony Costello, Director of the Institute for Global Health, University of London in the United Kingdom (UCL), and co-author of the report. “Reaching 4°C warming would have catastrophic effects on human health. This is a situation that could call into question all the progress of the last half-century. We believe that the climate emergency is a medical emergency,” he added.

Indeed, the researchers found that these changes induce heat-related disorders, such as heat stress and a reduction in work capacity, but also an increase in asthma and respiratory diseases. Infectious and vector-borne diseases (pathologies transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, lice, ticks, flies) will develop like gastrointestinal diseases. These climatic changes will also be responsible for post-traumatic disorders and an increase in depression.
“Everything we do against climate change, whether it’s new ways of getting around, like walking or cycling, better eating habits or even fighting pollution, will benefit our health” , also remarked Professor Anthony Costello.
“The results of this study are important for clinicians who need to understand this evolution in order to discuss the health risks related to their patients and to inform public policy,” conclude the authors of this report.
