According to the bulletin from the Sentinel health surveillance network published on Wednesday July 17, the number of cases of gastroenteritis exceeded the epidemic threshold in France during the second week of July.
With sunny days, we expect a lower incidence of certain diseases, including gastroenteritis. And yet… According to the weekly bulletin of the Sentinelles health surveillance network published on Wednesday July 17, the number of gastrointestinal cases exceeded the epidemic threshold in France during the second week of July.
“The incidence rate of cases of acute diarrhea seen in general medicine consultations was estimated at 93 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, just above the epidemic threshold set at 92 cases per 100,000 inhabitants”, it is thus written.
In detail, peaks were observed in Corsica (155 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), in Pays de la Loire (128 cases) and in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (118 cases). In New Aquitaine, the number of cases remains low except in the Basque Country where the risk is higher.
The situation should soon stabilize
But don’t panic, the situation should stabilize very soon. “The incidence rate should consolidate below the epidemic threshold once all the data is available”, writes Sentinelles.
“Traditionally, the epidemic occurs in winter, at the time of the end of year celebrations. But we are seeing more and more waves of gastroenteritis at other times of the year, for example at the start of the school year. September”, comments Serge Smadja, General Secretary of SOS Médecins France, at the microphone of BFMTV.
Remember to wash your hands regularly
The transmission of the viruses, bacteria or parasites responsible for gastroenteritis takes place during contact with a patient, contaminated water or objects on which fine particles have been deposited, such as the stools of contaminated people.
Also, to avoid catching this extremely contagious disease, be very rigorous in terms of hygiene. Wash your hands properly several times a day and after each visit to the toilet. Also remember to hydrate yourself regularly. If you start to have stomach pains, vomiting or diarrhea, see a doctor immediately.
