A petition, which has already collected 1,200 signatures from doctors and midwives, launched by Dr Philippe de Chazournes, general practitioner in Saint-Denis de la Réunion, and supported by MEP Michèle Rivasi, calls for a moratorium intended to make the update on the effectiveness of the vaccine against cervical cancer. Until 2006, when the vaccine received its marketing authorization, screening was done by smear. Today, according to Dr de Chazournes, the smear is still the best way to detect precancerous lesions: it must be done every three years from 25 to 65 years. It does not present any contraindication or side effect and it is effective, knowing that between the detection of the first precancerous lesions, detectable by smear, and the cancer, at least 10 years elapse … It is also little expensive.
The government, which has launched a very large-scale anti-cancer plan, hopes that within five years, 80% of girls between the ages of 10 and 14 will be vaccinated, while the European Medicines Agency is ready to generalize this vaccine on boys in anal cancer prevention. Dr de Chazournes believes that an international investigation into the efficacy and effects of this vaccine should be launched, regardless of conflicts of interest, while a number of countries such as Japan have already given up on this vaccine.
As early as 2006, Dr de Chazournes was trying to alert public opinion and was able to have the Regional Union of Doctors of Reunion finance an advertising insert in Le Monde, which did not only earn him friends. However, his words only repeated the conclusions of research and published studies, as well as the words of the Conseil Supérieur d’Hygiène Publique de France: ” The effectiveness of the vaccine against the cervix has not been demonstrated. It does not protect against all strains of viruses. Its long-term tolerance is unknown. Even in the event of vaccination, the smear carried out every three years remains the best method of prevention, the detection of an anomaly allowing it to be cured even before the cancer manifests itself.. “
The petition calls for a moratorium on the systematic use of the vaccine against the HPV virus (or papillomavirus), based on the following points:
- That the consequences of vaccination in young girls are unknown and the efficacy of the vaccine remains to be proven;
- That the High Council of Public Health estimate its effectiveness, all HPV viruses combined, at less than 20% among 16-23 year olds. In fact, there are 120 strains of HPV, 15 with carcinogenic potential, and the vaccine may only be effective against one strain, or even two (strain 16 and 18).1 ;
- That, during the reference studies, the vaccine was tested against a false placebo… false, because it contained aluminum like it;
- That the presumption of serious undesirable effects should not be neglected;
- That the fact of vaccinating women who have not started their sexual life, according to an Australian study, increases the number of severe precancerous lesions in them;
- That the vaccine is particularly expensive and that it constitutes an extremely heavy expense for health insurance ;
- That an investigation published recently in Le Canard Enchaîné showed that there was suspicion of interests;
- That it has been shown that a majority of women think that the smear becomes unnecessary after vaccination, the consequence of a feeling of protection which turns out to be in fact illusory;
- That faced with this vaccination, the health authorities have shown that the regular practice of the smear alone, properly carried out and analyzed, proves its value in the screening of precancerous lesions.
- The signatories therefore call for the urgent establishment of a parliamentary mission on the advisability of this vaccination.
An expert without conflict of interest is an expert without interest
Dr Michel Coletti, pharmacist and doctor, specifies that there is no transparency on drug prices, and specifies that the Transparency Commission, one of the official bodies allowing marketing authorization, had insisted on 2006 to refuse this vaccine. You have to realize how juicy the market is: 2,500,000 subjects can benefit from it, at the reimbursed rate of € 360 for the 3 doses… Dr Coletti reminds that social security sits on the committee that sets the prices and holds its meetings. in the greatest discretion, even the greatest secrecy. Today, cancer and vaccinations are the two most important markets in the pharmaceutical industry.
50% of women in France have never had a single smear
Dr Hamon specifies that only half of the women in France have been tested by smear. The smear is only covered 50% by social security. The vaccine costs 300 million euros annually, covered 100% by health insurance… The same scandal recently revealed the conflicts of interest concerning a drug intended for macular degeneration, Avastin at the price of 50 € , replaced by its equivalent Lucentis, 8 times more expensive. A decree has just been taken to revert to Avastin, its implementation will take two years.
Lesions with high carcinogenic potential are favored by tobacco and sexually transmitted infections
Dr Alain SIARY indicates that the problem is not the virus itself, but the inability to eliminate it by some people. Precancerous HPV lesions are markedly increased in the case of tobacco consumption, concomitant STIs (sexually transmitted infections) such as AIDS (HIV), due to the resulting immunosuppression. It is a transient infection which is usually eliminated within 2 years. 10% of the population has been infected at some point in life. The condom, especially as long as the sex life is unstable, remains the best way to protect oneself from viruses and sexually transmitted diseases. The vaccine does not protect against 30 other HPVs with oncogenic potential (30% of HPVs). A real doubt hangs over a major role of HPV 18, that which would be the most effective in the vaccine, in the occurrence of severe dysplasias.
And finally, the side effects and long term are still poorly understood, knowing that the vaccine has been on sale for 8 years. To date, 50 complaints have been lodged and 24 undesirable effects declared per 100,000 vaccinations have been noted, effects suspected of triggering in particular autoimmune diseases. The effects on pregnancy are not known.
It is important to remember that the law obliges the medical profession to seek the patient’s opinion before any treatment and to take their reservations into account. Information is better than pressure.
