The proportion of French women who no longer wax their bikini line hair at all has notably increased continuously over the past eight years.
- Among French women, the absence of hair removal has doubled in eight years (28% in 2021 against 15% in 2013).
- Growing out hair has many health benefits.
According to a new survey, French women wax less and less, which has a positive impact on their health.
Unprecedented decline in hair removal
On the occasion of the challenge “Januhairy” inviting women to let their hair grow to lift taboos, the pole Gender, sexualities and sexual health of Ifop conducted for the platform Charles.co a survey measuring the evolution of the practice of “No Shave” (absence of depilation). Carried out on a representative national sample of substantial size (2,000 people), this survey highlights an unprecedented decline in hair removal in France among women.
The practice of “No Shave” has doubled in eight years (28% in 2021 against 15% in 2013). The proportion of French women no longer waxing their bikini line hair at all has notably increased continuously. Thereby, “while the confinements have undoubtedly created conditions conducive to this trend (up 4 points compared to a measure taken before the appearance of Covid-19), the health crisis has only accelerated a “return hair “already noticeable for a few years”write the pollsters.
Hair has specific biological functions
This trend is a good thing from a health point of view, because hair has very specific biological functions. They protect the skin from UV, limit vaginal dryness, reduce the risk of infection during sexual intercourse, retain sweat, filter microbes, dust, small insects and pollen, protect against heat and cold and finally multiply tenfold sexual attraction via pheromones.
Concerning more particularly sexual health, the survey also shatters certain received ideas linking, for example, male desire to the absence of female hair. The vast majority of men surveyed by Ifop thus declare that they could make love with a woman without hair removal in the armpits (66%), legs (61%) or pubis (70%) .
