One day in the not-too-distant future, the assistant in your smartphone is so “smart” that it can tell you what the camera is seeing. He can then recognize objects, name colors, read texts and so on. The blind people will undoubtedly celebrate on that day, because such a guide dog is handy in traffic, but it does not tell you whether foodstuffs are past their best-before date, nor whether the sweater you take out of the cupboard colors with your pants. Until then, there’s the likeable app Be My Eyes where sighted people can sign up to help blind people with these kinds of questions.
