There is currently a fake e-mail in circulation that is supposedly sent on behalf of the Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW). You will be asked to send a copy of your driving license by way of identification. Don’t do this, it’s a trick.
The mail comes from @rdw.services, and that is not from the real RDW. The fake email states that some changes have been made to the privacy policy with effect from June 1, 2022. As a result, the RDW is supposedly unable to register you in the Basic Registration Vehicles. Therefore, according to the criminals, you should send a copy of your driver’s license. This under the guise of “new legal and regulatory requirements” in the field of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
What is being asked of you?
- It must be a scan of the front and back
- The quality of the scan must be high
- It must be a color copy
What is the risk?
You should never just email an official ID to anyone. This applies to passports, identity cards and driver’s licenses. It contains a lot of personal data, including your name, date of birth, signature and citizen service number (BSN).
The driver’s license is a valid proof of identity, and you can use it to conclude rental contracts and telephone subscriptions. You usually pay for any financial damage yourself.
It may happen that certain companies or authorities do have reasons to ask you for a copy of your proof of identity. How to make a safe copy read on the website of the central government >>
