The third generation of Formula E will benefit from two electric motors, a completely revised aerodynamic configuration, and more environmentally friendly manufacturing according to the FIA. It will enter the track for season 9 of the discipline (2022-2023).
The FIA has just lifted the veil on the third-generation, or Gen3, Formula E single-seater for the 2022 Monaco E-Prix. The racing car promises to be more efficient, more high-tech but also more environmentally friendly than the current Gen2. It will be used from the ninth season of FE, i.e. the 2022/2023 championship.
A French design
Once again, the Federation called on the French company Spark Racing Technology to design the next FE. The Gen3 changes look compared to the Gen2, abandoning some curves in favor of rough cut lines, and returning to open front wheels. The two longitudinal rear fins evoke certain fighter planes. The Gen3 is presented as the first racing car specifically optimized for competitions in urban environments.
Sharp increase in performance
The Gen2 draws a maximum of 340 hp (250 kW) from its single rear motor, with a limit of 272 hp (200 kW) when racing. The Gen3 has a 476 hp (350 kW) rear motor but also a front engine of 340 hp (250 kW), all served by an energy efficiency of around 95%. The gain in regenerative braking authorized by this addition allows the car to dispense with hydraulic brakes at the rear, and to benefit from a power of 600 kW in energy recovery. The FIA announces a top speed of over 322 km/h, while the Gen2 is limited to 280 km/h. Performance may be improved by software updates. Some information such as the weight of the vehicle still remains to be known. The Gen2 weighs a minimum of 900 kg including the driver, including 385 kg of battery.

The CO neutral car race2 ?
The FIA promises that FE Gen3 batteries use minerals from sustainable sources, that their batteries will be recycled when they reach the end of their cycle, and that the cars’ bodies are made in part of recycled carbon fiber from scrapped Gen2 cars. . Flax fiber is also used, for a carbon footprint reduced by 10% for car shells. Natural rubber and recycled fibers represent up to 26% of tire composition. Between the reduction of CO emissions2 and compensation for those issued, FIA targets carbon-neutral Formula E. Seven teams have already confirmed their commitment for season 9 of the FE with the Gen3: DS, Porsche, Maserati, Jaguar, Nissan, Nio and Mahindra.
