Two transgender parents gave birth to a child last February, in Bourges, and this is a first in France.
- A first baby was born in France from a spontaneous pregnancy of transgender parents.
- It’s about a little girl called Avah.
- The pregnancy proceeded without complications.
Avah is the first name of the first baby born in France to transgender parents who did not have recourse to medically assisted procreation (PMA), that is to say that the pregnancy was spontaneous. This little girl, 50 centimeters and 3.640 kilograms at birth, was born in Bourges last February.
The first transgender parents to have a baby
Since 2016, it is no longer compulsory to be sterilized in order to be able to change the indication of sex on one’s civil status. Thus, Matéo, the male father in civil status, but born a woman, gave birth to Avah. The mother, Victoire, was born a man and a woman in the civil status.
“Everything has been done to get as close as possible to a classic situation, explains Doctor Julien Cirier at Berry Republicanhead of the obstetrics gynecology department and of the woman, mother and child center at the Jacques-Coeur hospital in Bourges. There was no reason to do a different treatment. The team carried on as usual.” Moreover, no complications occurred and everything went very well as evidenced by this Facebook post.
A complicated administrative situation for transgender people
“I went to the town hall of Bourges the day after the birth, says Victory. The civil status employees were very understanding! On the birth certificate, it is simply stated that our daughter was born to Mattéo and me. An annotation concerning the change of sex is made on his full birth certificate, but I have asked that it be blocked and that it can never be consulted again. I just keep a copy to show my daughter.“
On the other hand, on the family booklet, it is written that Matteo is Avah’s mother. As this is a first in France, administrative software has never had this case. “It blocks all software. Mutual insurance, Social Security, Caf…“, indicates Mattéo. The parents hope to be able to modify the family record book quickly.
