While in the United States several deaths have been linked to electronic cigarettes, the Academy of Medicine fears a crisis of confidence in France.
Are you hesitating to drop the cigarette for vaping? On Thursday, December 12, the Academy of Medicine published a notice concerning you. For her, this system, “useful for quitting smoking”, is better controlled in France than in the United States. This refers to the “sudden epidemic of pulmonary pathologies” observed in recent months across the Atlantic. Several dozen people have died and as a result, the French have apparently lost confidence in the electronic cigarette.
Thus, according to an Odoxa survey published in early November, 56% of French people consider electronic cigarettes as risky as traditional cigarettes, and 57% of respondents believe that it is an effective way to reduce tobacco consumption, i.e. 16 points less. than in May, before the outbreak of the health crisis in the United States. “This crisis of confidence could cause the death of thousands of smokers while tobacco kills half of its loyal consumers,” fears the Academy of Medicine in a press release.
No “misuse” of electronic cigarettes in France
In France, “electronic cigarettes are subject to quality and safety standards, unlike the United States”, reassures the Academy. She recalls in passing that “the main cause” of these lung damage is a “diversion” of the use of electronic cigarettes with “harmful content”. Probably vitamin E oil added to cannabis liquids, as was also the case in Belgium recently. In France we do not face any “misuse” of this product by minors, specifies the Academy. Additionally, she adds that vaping “helps with quitting and reducing tobacco use.”
No tar or carbon monoxide
Even today, the potentially harmful effects of electronic cigarettes are not precisely known. We know that the liquids used contain less dangerous substances than traditional cigarettes, such as tar (carcinogenic) or carbon monoxide (cardiovascular disease factor). However, the vapor inhaled by “vapers” contains fine particles that penetrate the lungs. Recently, researchers in a study published in the journal Cardiovascular Research estimated that regular exposure to the substances contained in e-liquid could, in time, have consequences on cardiovascular health. It will however be necessary to wait for several studies, several decades before being certain of the effects of these products on our health.
