Since Sunday January 7, France has been experiencing an episode of extreme cold, which will continue to intensify until Tuesday. Nearly 40 departments have been placed on extreme cold yellow vigilance. Maximum temperatures should not exceed 0°C in half of France.
A healthy diet and regular physical activity to strengthen the immune system
Professor Glen Davison, expert in nutrition and exercise immunology and Director of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Kent (UK), shared several tipsin order to boost your immune system in the face of falling temperatures.
In very cold weather, it can be tempting to eat comfort foods such as chocolate, cakes or sweets while wrapping yourself in a duvet. However, a healthy and balanced diet is one of the keys to strengthening the immune system. As Professor Glen Davison recalled, nutritional deficiencies impact immune function. To prevent them, it is therefore recommended to consume seasonal fruits and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. “Individuals should also avoid drinking too much alcohol, as this can have negative effects on immunity and resistance to infections”recommended the specialist.
The role of the immune system is to protect the body against foreign or dangerous invaders. If it is weakened, we are at greater risk of contracting infections. Regular physical activity helps boost our immune health. Exercising when you are tired or sick seems counterintuitive, but it helps prevent certain infectious diseases. “Sports activity can also have beneficial effects on general well-being, mood and psychological state. It can reduce stress and improve sleep. All of these factors have beneficial effects on immunity”, said Professor Glen Davison. During this period of extreme cold, you can, for example, practice muscle strengthening, Yoga or Pilates from home. For those ready to face negative temperatures, running or cycling are also physical activities beneficial to the immune system.
Immune system: be careful with food supplements
Food supplements may sometimes be indicated to strengthen the immune system. However, it is better to be careful when taking these products. Before taking them, it is particularly advisable to obtain medical advice. “Some supplements, particularly probiotics and certain plant-derived products (echinacea, black elderberry and certain polyphenols), may be beneficial, but only in specific situations/contexts. Individuals should consider their personal needs, exercise caution and avoid using supplements without first consulting a healthcare professional.”warned Professor Glen Davison.
