The number of emergency visits for alcohol consumption has increased by 20%, according to an epidemiological point on Euro 2016.
They should not be confused with the hooligans but the supporters of Euro 2016 have a heavy hand when it comes to alcohol. Since the start of the competition, the scenes of alcoholic fans at a café terrace or in a stadium have multiplied. And it seems to be true in numbers.
The number of emergency visits for alcohol consumption increased by 20% last week compared to the previous one, notes the National Public Health Agency (ANSP) in a report epidemiological update on Euro 2016 broadcast on Thursday.
In more detail, this gives 551 more passages in this service for this reason on the age group of 15-74 years. But strangely, the Agency specifies that “the workforce remains at levels close to those of the two previous years”.
England-Russia match raises stats
This conclusion is all the more surprising given that the ANSP takes stock of the various football matches played in France. And for some cities, it is worrying. We can cite the ARA region (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) where these epidemiologists have noted a “significant increase” in emergency room visits for the “Alcohol” diagnosis. This was particularly the case on Saturday 11 June with 67 crossings at regional level against an average of 36 daily crossings over the last 3 months. It should be noted that that day, three football matches were being played and the bars in the region were packed …
Another example, in the PACA region (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) where the ANSP noted a significant increase during the weekend of 11-12 June of around fifty passages on Saturdays, due to violent events around the England-Russia match (played in Marseille). This would also be linked to the increase in tourist activities since early June as every year. But again, alcohol has taken its toll …
However, do not panic on the side of the Agency which concludes: “No particular report to note in connection with Euro 2016 that could have a health impact”. We can imagine that the next few weeks will be decisive in measuring the alcohol effect of Euro 2016.
