In connection with an addictology association, Bordeaux has developed a system dedicated to the prevention of the risks associated with alcohol consumption during Euro 2016 football.
The streets of Marseille littered with bottles and cans, scenes of urban guerrilla warfare in the Old Port on June 11 on the sidelines of the Russia-England match. The next day, a supporter of Northern Ireland who fell from a railing not far from the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and was killed. Barely two days after the kick-off of Euro 2016, the excesses have already scratched the party. And yet, one of the five host cities seems to be doing well: Bordeaux, which will not host any match classified at risk.
The Gironde municipality will host 5 matches during the sporting event, which will take place from June 10 to July 10. A fan zone has also been set up on the Place des Quinconces, along the Garonne. To deal with the sometimes excessive alcohol consumption, the City Council worked in conjunction with the Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes Regional Health Agency.
Volunteers and specialists deployed
Throughout Euro 2016, the health surveillance system will be reinforced in Bordeaux. The objective is clearly announced: the ARS wants to avoid alcohol-related overflows and dehydration – in the event of high temperatures – but also digestive disorders or asthma.
In order to achieve its objective, the ARS has extended its “Alternative Festive Trends” (TAF) system, developed in conjunction with the Aquitaine delegation of the National Association for the Prevention of Alcohol Addiction (ANPAA). Civic service volunteers trained in this type of event and addictology specialists will meet the young people. Their role: to prevent the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption and to help people in difficulty. Thanks to a partnership with Cap Sciences, these workers benefit from more complete sanitary equipment.
Postcards
The ARS has also developed awareness-raising actions for the general public focused on risk prevention. Two postcards were published with a few simple tips: hydrate, consume alcohol reasonably in town and in fan zones, drink water regularly but also wear a condom in case of sexual intercourse.

The last part of the actions put in place by the LRA takes into account the terrorist risk. The local SAMU can be mobilized in the event of an “unexpected event”, just like sufficiently equipped health establishments – namely those which have an emergency service, resuscitation and technical facilities.
