A draft regulation of endocrine disruptors is currently being studied by the European Commission in Brussels. This will be a first because no country has yet established regulations on these products, such as bisphenols Where phthalates, which interfere with our hormonal system.
Endocrine disruptors treated like any other product
However, in this draft regulation, one sentence seems to pose a problem: “Endocrine disruptors and their harmful effects should be treated like any other chemical of concern for human health or the environment”. This sentence makes scientists jump because it means that endocrine disruptors will not be banned a priori. But that they will be a posteriori, when a harmful effect is declared.
Around a hundred researchers therefore decided to publish a forum in the daily Le Monde: “Endocrine disruptors, stop manipulating science” in order to denounce the weight of industrialists on the European Commission.
Because, as these scientists point out, endocrine disruptors represent “a global threat to health”. Numerous studies have already shown that they cause decreased fertility, that they increase the risk of asthma, that they are responsible miscarriages or even behavioral disturbancesin children.
