More than 6,400 Americans participated in a job satisfaction study that began in 1979 when they were between 14 and 22 years old. Researchers from the University of Ohio (USA) examined the health of those who were happy at work and compared the results with those who did not. no job satisfaction.
In total, 45% of study participants said they had never felt satisfaction over the years of work and 15%, on the contrary, said they had always been happy. The remaining 40% oscillated between the two states of mind: satisfaction at the start of their career but dissatisfaction afterwards (23%) and dissatisfaction at the start of their professional activity but improvement over the years (17%).
Depression, anxiety and insomnia appear at 40
The results of this study show that those who were dissatisfied with their job from the start of their professional career were also those who suffered the most from depression, anxiety and insomnia at the age of 40. They were also more likely to be diagnosed with emotional issues. In contrast, those whose job satisfaction improved as they got older had no health problems.
“This study is important because health problems such as depression or anxiety can be precursors to cardiovascular problems” says Dr. Hui Zheng, lead author of the study.
The latter notes, however, that his study ended with the great economic recession that hit the United States. “This most certainly increased job insecurity and job dissatisfaction, which would have resulted in even more negative results for our study if it had ended today”.
