Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: does taking pregabalin make sense?
I am a 66 year old woman and am taking pregabalin for fibromyalgia. It works moderately. Is it true that pregabalin reduces anxiety disorders? I also take medication for manic depression. Is pregabalin useful for me or should I stop?
Answer:
Pregabalin is a broad-acting epileptic drug. Because it makes the nerves less irritable, it is also used for nerve pain and by people with a worry disorder. It does not work equally well for everyone and there are often side effects, such as drowsiness, headache and increased appetite. It is difficult to predict in advance whether you will benefit from it. It is therefore a matter of trying it out and after a while assessing together with the doctor whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. In any case, do not stop taking it all at once, otherwise withdrawal symptoms may occur.
