Preparing food safely
The coronavirus is spreading rapidly around the world. We know that the infections pass from person to person, but can we also get the virus through food?
There is currently no evidence that food can cause you to contract the coronavirus through food, reports that the Nutrition Center. The virus needs a person or animal to stay alive and grow.
Preparing food and the coronavirus
Although the coronavirus cannot be transmitted through food, it is important to handle food hygienically. This prevents a possible virus particle from ending up on your food.
Follow the following general hygiene advice for this:
– Always wash your hands well before eating and before preparing food.
– Always wash fruits and vegetables well.
– Provide clean kitchen utensils.
– Do not sneeze or cough over food. Do you have to sneeze while preparing food? Then do this on the inside of your elbow. Wash your hands thoroughly before continuing to prepare the food.
– Change dish, hand and tea towels regularly.
– Prevent cross-contamination and separate cooked and raw food.
– Cut meat, fish and vegetables on different cutting boards.
– Heat food through and through to kill bacteria and viruses. Turn food in the microwave regularly.
– Set your fridge to 4 ºC, so that food stays good longer and bacteria don’t have a chance.
– When shopping, make sure that the packaging is still intact, check the best before date and buy refrigerated products last. Wash your hands well before and after shopping.
