It still happens that at some online stores a customer is obliged to fill in his date of birth when placing an order. Webshops apparently want to know this, but whether they are allowed to oblige depends on the reason.
That reports Thuiswinkel.org. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulates how organizations should handle personal data. The basic principle is that web shops and other organizations are not allowed to process personal data that they do not need. A webshop may therefore only ask for a date of birth if there is a valid reason for doing so. The store must inform the customer about this in the privacy statement.
An example of a valid reason is if a customer wants to pay afterwards and the webshop wants to perform a credit check in advance. An online store may also want to perform a BKR registration check in advance. Taking out car or health insurance is also a valid reason for the insurer to ask about the date of birth. If there are legal age limits, such as when selling alcohol, the webshop is legally obliged to know how old the customer is.
In most cases it is not necessary for a webshop to know the date of birth. If it does happen, check the privacy statement to see if this is correct.
