The coronavirus causes respiratory disease, the symptoms of which may resemble the flu with lung complications, headaches, and long, very painful body aches, in many cases. Corn other symptoms, more “atypical” also exist, such as conjunctivitis, loss of smell or digestive disorders. The Directorate General of Health recently alerted on this subject, specifying that it concerned “in the foreground the elderly“. The French Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, as well as the National Professional Council of Geriatrics have validated this thesis of atypical symptoms. But the elderly are not the only ones concerned.
In the elderly, we often observe, along with classic symptoms: “confusion or falls, diarrhea and a fever with temperature variations between hyper and hypothermia“. But digestive disorders do not occur in a second step, in” addition “to the known symptoms of Covid-19. On the contrary, they are precursors of 4 to 5 days. A resident of EHPAD in Montpellier was thus hospitalized for digestive disorders, before declaring the rest of the manifestations of the disease, emphasizes Doctor’s Daily.
Digestive disorders: a Covid-19 alert
The atypical appearance of these symptoms is partly responsible for the rapid spread of the virus in some retirement homes. Digestive disorders did not alert healthcare staff to the possibility of a Covid-19 infection. Now that they have been detected as such, with the appearance of digestive disorders in nursing homes, it is advisable to suspect a case of Covid-19. However, if the rest of the manifestations, particularly respiratory symptoms, do not appear within 7 days, then the alert can be lifted.
Ditto apart from retirement homes. A small Chinese study, published in theAmerican Journal of Gastroenterology highlights that out of 204 patients observed, whose average age is 55, 48.5% went to hospital for digestive disorders: diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain, before being screened positive for Covid-19 .
