It is known that the consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits reduces the risk of diabetes type 2. But a new study has come to specify which fruit should go our preference if we want to avoid taking anti-diabetic drugs. And the prize goes to … grapefruit ! Indeed, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Berkeley (California), grapefruit juice is just as effective as the main drug against type 2 diabetes, metformin , to lower blood sugar.
Considering the fact that this study was funded by the Growers Cooperative, a cooperative of grapefruit growers, one can suddenly be skeptical about the results. . But Professor Joseph Napoli, the main author of the study, affirms loud and clear: “we have published only the strict result of our research, in complete independence from the donor. grapefruit juice had had no blood sugar results, we would have written that as well “.
A drop of 13 to 17% in the blood sugar level
For this study, the Californian researchers fed three groups of mice with different drinks: sugar water for the first group, grapefruit juice for the second group and added water. e of metformin for the third group. Previously, mice had been fed a high fat diet.
At the end of this test, the mice drinking grapefruit juice lost 18% more weight compared to those who drank sugary water and had a 13 to 17% drop in their rate. blood sugar. But what is most surprising is that the hypoglycaemic effects were identical in the group drinking grapefruit juice and in the group taking metformin.
The only downside, however: to achieve the same antiglycemic effects as the drug, we would have to drink four large glasses of grapefruit juice per day.
This does not slow down Professor Napoli in his research since he will now verify what the impact on health of lower doses of fruit juice could be.
