the prediabetes, which precedes type 2 diabetes, is characterized by high blood sugar levels but not enough for diabetes to develop. According to a new study conducted by American researchers at the Intermountain Heart Institute in Salt Lake City (Utah), ultra-fast speeds type 5: 2 (2 days of very small portions and 5 days of Mediterranean food), would fight the risk of diabetes in pre-diabetics.
Dr Horne, director of the cardiovascular pathologies and genetic epidemiology department and his team of researchers, based themselves on people aged between 30 and 69 years who each presented one of the following risk factors: obesity, high triglyceride level, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and high fasting blood sugar.
After a period of 6 weeks, the cholesterol level decreases by approximately 12%
During the first days of fasting, researchers observe an increase in the rate of cholesterol, then beyond a long period (6 weeks), a decrease of about 12%.
It is a very particular biological process which explains the phenomenon. During the first few days of fasting, the body uses lipids in fat cells, which increases and then decreases the level of cholesterol in the blood. In the pre-diabetic, the body uses LDL cholesterol (considered bad cholesterol) in fat cells, thereby canceling resistance to insulin (which lowers the level of glucose in the blood).
“Fasting could be an important preventive measure,” says Dr Horne. But even if they are optimistic about this new therapeutic weapon, the researchers underline the need for additional studies to specify the modalities of the treatment of pre-diabetes by fasting.
