After the hearty meals of the holidays, some French people decide to start a detox cure to eliminate the excesses accumulated during this time of year. Nutritionist and dietician Elsa Orivel explains how to get started.
– Why doctor: What is a detox cure?
Elsa Orivel – This is a short-term diet. In general, it lasts 2 to 3 days but it is possible to do it up to 5 days maximum. The aim of the detox cure is to put less stress on the liver.
– What are its effects on the body?
This method allows the liver to empty itself, that is to say, to eliminate the toxins accumulated over several rich meals. The detox cure also stimulates the immune system. In some cases, it promotes the loss of one or two pounds taken over a short period.
– In what cases can it be done?
People in good health can start a detox cure in January after the holiday season. During this period, we tend to indulge ourselves and ingest sugars, fatty foods and drink alcohol in large quantities. These dietary excesses can result in a liver attack and lead to stomach aches or bloating. In this situation, the detox cure helps to lighten the body.
This method of detoxification can also be done at seasonal changes, more precisely in spring and autumn. In this case, the cure is carried out longer and allows to regenerate the body, cleanse the liver, skin, kidneys and intestines. It’s like spring cleaning.
The detox cure can also be interesting for patients who have contracted Covid-19.
– What foods to favor and avoid?
For 2 to 3 days, it is advisable to eat vegetables and fruits. Among the vegetables to favor, we find celery, black radish, artichokes or even kale. These foods are rich in vitamins B9, which act directly on the liver. Regarding fruit, it is better to bet on citrus fruits, pineapple, kiwi and pomegranate. These products are a source of vitamin C, which contributes to the proper functioning of the immune system.
It is recommended to avoid drinking coffee, eating fatty and sugary foods or even cooked fats because these elements take time to be filtered by the liver.
– How to start the cure?
The first day, it is advisable to eat many fruits and vegetables as well as a small quantity of complete starchy foods. For a week, you can drink carrot, apple and ginger juice every morning to detoxify the body. It is recommended to replace coffee with lemon water (half a lemon squeezed in hot water). In the evening, we turn to a digestive herbal tea, with thyme or rosemary for example.
– Is it effective?
The detox cure really makes it possible to lighten the body and to feel better because it overcomes the symptoms associated with a liver attack.
– Are there any contraindications?
This method is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is also contraindicated for patients suffering from liver disease: they must seek the advice of their doctor before starting it.
