He is banned from baby bottles and food containers since January 2015. Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical substance recognized as endocrine disruptor, is however still present on the shelves of our supermarkets, according to a survey by the Association Santé Environnement France (Asef), carried out with the team of the television program “On n’est plus des Pigeons”.
The association had two cans of drinks and two cans containing white beans tested in the laboratory. One of the cans and one of the cans contained BPA. “Admittedly, these are very low doses (less than one microgram per liter) and the tests having been carried out on a small sample, we cannot extrapolate. Nevertheless we are surprised to have found BPA in boxes sold in stores more than a year after its ban.“explains doctor Pierre Souvet, president of Asef, on the association’s website. The latter also tested six bottles, which did not reveal any trace of bisphenol.”This is good news for young parents! However, we recommend that you use glass bottles as much as possible if you heat the water.“comments Dr Pierre Souvet.
Dangerous bisphenols, even at low doses
In addition to bisphenol A, the can and the canned product in question contained bisphenols F and S. These two substances are still authorized but they could also “disrupt our hormones even at low doses“, according to Asef. Indeed, in January 2015, a Canadian study revealed that bisphenol S would be as toxic as bisphenol A, especially for brain development. And the low doses of these products do not reduce their dangerousness. “The doses present in the products are low, but they will not have the same effect on people, depending on age, sex, genetic profile, type of product, frequency or duration of exposure. We know that a fetus carried by a pregnant woman will be much more sensitive to these products than a 50-year-old man …“reveals Doctor Patrice Halimi, pediatric surgeon at the Etoile clinic in Aix-en-Provence and secretary general of Asef.
Endocrine disruptors such as BPA but also phthalates, the perfluorinated compoundswhere the pesticides, are suspected of interacting with the hormonal system, impair fertility and fetal development and play a role in triggering cancer.
