A 54-year-old man hospitalized in intensive care died of dengue fever. He is the 11th victim since the start of the year.
A new victim of dengue is to be deplored in New Caledonia. A 54-year-old man has succumbed to this infectious disease. The inhabitant of Dumbéa had been hospitalized in intensive care since Sunday. This new death brings the number of victims of dengue fever to 11 since January.
According to New Caledonian authorities, nearly 5,000 cases have been identified since 1er September 2016. The peak of the epidemic was reached in March 2017. The number of clinical or suspected cases has since decreased.
Don’t let your guard down
With 1,970 people infected, the capital Noumea is the most affected by the epidemic. Then come the municipalities of Païta, Mont-Dore and Dumbéa. All of these cities have recorded dengue-related deaths, including a 6-month-old infant.
The archipelago’s health authorities ask the population to remain vigilant and not to lower their guard against mosquitoes. Despite the return of the cool season, these pests can still act and transmit the dengue virus. New Caledonians are therefore called upon to protect themselves against mosquito bites.
They are also asked to destroy the breeding sites in their garden (flower pots full of water, uncleaned gutters) and at their homes.
