As recalled the New Caledonians, the dengue epidemic has been smoldering on “the stone” since the end of January. But despite the efforts of the city of Noumea and the Department of Health and Social Affairs (Dass) of New Caledonia, this epidemic could not be contained any longer.
With 16 new cases of dengue serotype 1 officially listed yesterday, the number of cases has officially crossed the epidemic threshold of 200 cases.
Mosquitoes become resistant to insecticides
More importantly than the number of cases, these are now the dengue fever that multiply. In Nouméa more and more neighborhoods are affected. And the disease has now been exported to other municipalities.
Because mosquitoes are now resistant to the only authorized insecticide product, as confirmed by the director of Dass, Jean-Paul Grangeon, in New Caledonians: “We have just received the results of the study that we requested from the Institut Pasteur. There is indeed resistance to deltamethrin. Today, despite all our efforts and the importance of the action of the public authorities, spraying, anti-vector control, but also information and distribution of repellents to each individual within a radius of 100 meters, we do not could not contain the epidemic “.
The rules to follow
• The first thing to do is to protect yourself. So as not to get bitten of course, but also so as not to become a vector of the disease.
• Apply a repellant to all parts of the body not protected by clothing, favoring the application in the morning and late afternoon during periods of maximum activity for the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
• Then eliminate all breeding sites by emptying each container such as sub-pots, toys left outside and buckets.
• Evacuate all bulky waste that can serve as a shelter for mosquitoes from around the homes.
