A collective calls for the reopening of the maternity hospital in Decazeville, closed for ten months after the death of a mother and her baby.
They demand the reopening of the maternity ward. In Decazeville (Aveyron), elected officials and associations met this Friday to “take stock” of the service situation and to agree on a new meeting for the next event, which will therefore be held on January 28.
The Decazeville maternity hospital was closed on August 6, 2016 by decision of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Occitanie, following the suspicious death of a 36-year-old mother and her newborn baby that day.
“Serious risks”
On December 22, the ARS extended the suspension of childbirth for a further six months “due to serious safety risks” to pregnant women. All deliveries were then redirected to the closest establishments, in Rodez, Villefranche-de-Rouergue and Aurillac.
In addition to unions, health professionals from the hospital and general medicine, the collective of “Future Moms of the Decazeville hospital health territory”, several elected officials participated in this meeting, including François Marty (mayor of Decazeville and president of the supervisory board of the hospital), PS MP Marie-Lou Marcel, Jean-Pierre Ladrech (mayor of Firmi), but also representatives of the economic world via Bernard Dalmon (business manager, president of Medef de l’Aveyron, president of the Mécanic Vallée and first vice-president of the CCI of Aveyron), reports the daily The Dispatch.
“Unfair” attitude
The collective denounced “the unfair attitude of the ARS, quick to communicate the day of the deaths and to immediately take a decision to suspend childbirth, but which persisted in its decision without taking certain elements into account”, thus indicates the regional daily. The collective thus highlighted the impact of this closure on the activity of the hospital and, more generally, on the development of the territory.
A large event is scheduled for January 28, at 3 p.m., Place Decazes in Decazeville.
