More than one in two young people do not intend to respect the curfew on December 31. This is according to a recent survey. However, a majority of French people accept the introduction of this travel restriction from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. from December 15.
71% of French people are in favor of the establishment of a curfew from December 15. It is the result of a Odoxa-Dentsu Consulting survey for France Info and Le Figaro, carried out with 990 people, via the Internet. Jean Castex announced it during a press conference on Thursday December 10: there will be a curfew between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. throughout France, with the exception of overseas territories. Christmas Eve, the evening of December 24, will be spared these restrictions.
On December 15, as we announced, we will move on to a new stage.

A majority of 18-24 year olds will wake up for the New Year
Faced with these new measures, the French are rather divided. 60% of respondents in the poll approve of maintaining the curfew for New Year’s Eve. “It was the most delicate announcement and, finally, a majority of French people adhere to it“, explains Gaël Sliman, president of Odoxa, to France Info. Most survey respondents expect to observe the curfew on the evening of December 31.
On the other hand, the measure does not pass with young people! If one in three French people thinks of cheating and celebrating New Year’s Eve despite travel bans after 8 p.m., the survey indicates that among young people, the proportion of non-compliance far exceeds one in two: 58% of 18-24 year olds say that they will celebrate the passage in 2021, against 30% of 35-64 year olds and 12% of over 65 year olds.
Why will there be a New Year’s curfew?
On November 24, the President of the Republic had already announced the establishment of a curfew from December 15 with two exceptions: Christmas and New Year. However, these measures were conditioned by two factors: the reduction in the number of contaminations and that of the number of people in intensive care. The second objective will be achieved on December 15, but not the first, hence a decision to toughen the deconfinement measures, in particular for New Year’s Eve. During his speech, Thursday, December 10, Jean Castex estimated that the New Year’s Eve of December 31 concentrated “all the ingredients for an epidemic rebound“. If he said he could not “forbid people to sleep at someone’s house“, he calls on the French to be responsible: barrier gestures and social distancing rules must be respected as much as possible, as well as wearing your mask and ventilating the rooms as much as possible. It is also recommended, for Christmas in particular, not to be more than six adults at the table.
What is the risk in the event of fraud?
In the event of an inspection, if you travel without authorization between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., you risk a fine of 135 euros. The only exceptions are travel for professional reasons, for compelling family reasons, for health reasons, for the needs of pets, for people with disabilities and for missions of general interest.
