The condition of hospitalized patients would remain stable for the first two days of hospitalization and it is on the third that they would be most at risk of suffering complications from Covid-19.
- Currently, more than 85,500 new cases of Covid-19 are recorded in France every day on average.
- On average, 134 people enter critical care every day.
More than 1,400 people are hospitalized on average every day due to Covid-19 in France, according to the latest figures available. Based on an as yet unpublished study presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) which takes place April 23-26 in Lisbon, Portugal, the third day spent in hospital would be the riskiest for symptomatic Covid-19 patients.
Analyze the different factors of the disease…
To reach this conclusion, the team of researchers analyzed the data of 90 patients – 54% of whom were men – who had a median age of 60 years and suffered from Covid-19 in severe and non-severe forms.
Specifically, they studied the blood samples that were taken from these hospitalized patients on the first, third, fifth, and seventh day. They wanted to analyze the levels of different indicators of the disease.
…to determine the most risky moment
Results: On the first day, there was no difference between the indicators. On the other hand, they had very different levels from the third day and, for some, in much higher quantities in people with a more severe form.
On the other hand, the group of individuals most strongly affected by Covid-19 took longer to recover normal amounts and also had a higher mortality rate: 20% against 0% in those who had a mild form. . Finally, those with the most severe forms were also more likely to develop secondary infections.
Increase the chances of patient survival
“Many patients present to the emergency department and require minimal oxygen support (…) but progress rapidly and require mechanical oxygen supportsay the authors. Monitoring these immune indicators could help identify these patients earlier” and thus start support more quickly. And, ultimatelyincrease the chances of survival of patients with Covid-19 in a severe form so that they do not develop a severe form.
The scientists now wish to continue their research in order to better identify the predictive indicators of an evolution of the disease towards a severe form. Eventually, a blood test could be used to identify patients most likely to become seriously ill.
