The Covid-19 epidemic is experiencing a new rebound. Why Doctor takes stock of the departments where hospital admissions are increasing.

Has the eighth wave already started in France? The number of Covid-19 cases is on the rise again in the country. In his last point of September 21, Public Health France announces 38,250 new cases in the last seven days, an increase of 13.9% in one week. At the same time, hospital admissions are also increasing. In seven days, 2,236 new hospitalizations for Covid-19 were recorded, an increase of 2.3%.
Hospitalization for Covid-19: inequalities according to the departments
The virus is hitting the territory unevenly. Thus, some departments are more affected by the increase in hospitalizations. According to data from covid-tracker, the rate of new hospital admissions is highest in the Loire department, with an increase of 25.47% in one week. Drôme, Ardennes, Martinique and Bas-Rhin are also experiencing an increase of between 22.7 and 25.45%. Eleven other departments are affected by an increase in hospital admissions due to Covid-19: Hautes-Pyrénées, Tarn, Ille-et-Vilaine, Eure-et-Loir, Meurthe-et -Moselle, Corrèze, Côtes-d’Armor, Essonne, Indre, Gers, Lot and Moselle. These new hospital admissions mainly concern people over 80, and those aged 70 to 79.
Coronavirus: fewer emergency visits and intensive care admissions
While hospitalizations are increasing, critical care admissions continue to decline. Over the last seven days, they have fallen by almost 10%. Visits to the emergency room because of Covid-19 are also less frequent. Between September 13 and 20, 261 people went to this type of service because of the coronavirus infection, or 26.7% less compared to the previous week. On the other hand, deaths increased very slightly: Public Health France recorded an increase of 0.1%.
More Covid-19 infections
When it comes to new Covid-19 cases, they are on the rise. As of September 21, 2022, the number of new cases has increased by 57.1%. Here again, the departments are not affected in the same way. The Ardennes have the highest incidence rate, with 543 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In almost all metropolitan departments, it is more than 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest rates concern Mayotte (13 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and Guyana (23 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
