As we suspected, it is now confirmed: it is also possible to catch the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus during a train trip. Researchers from the University of Southampton (in England) thus wanted to know what are precisely the risks of catching Covid-19 in this situation …
For this, British researchers (in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences) modeled a train car where all passengers are seated within three rows and five seats of an infected person.
Not surprisingly, the people closest to the infected individual are also those at the highest risk of catching the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus.
Barrier gestures, essential in public transport!
Thus, the direct neighbors of the infected person have a risk of about 3.5%, the risk for people sitting in the same row is about 1.5%, and the risk drops to 0.075% for people who sit in the place previously occupied by the infected person. In total, in a wagon with a person carrying the coronavirus, between 0% and 10% of travelers are likely to catch Covid-19.
“Our study shows that although there is a risk of transmission of Covid-19 on trains, the location of travelers and the travel time to an infected person can make a big difference“explains Dr Shengjie Lai, main author of this work published in the scientific journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
Conclusion? To avoid catching the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus, social distancing measures and wearing a mask are absolutely essential in public transport, especially in cases of chronic disease – diabetes, obesity, hypertension, asthma … -y on the road to vacation!
