Is the second wave of Covid-19 contamination here?
This is what the latest figures, alarming, published this Saturday, October 10 by Santé Publique France. According to the health agency, 26,896 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in France in 24 hours. A new record, which exceeds the contaminations of the day before, established at more than 20,000 cases for the first time.
The number of hospitalizations is also on the rise. 928 new intensive care admissions have been recorded in the last seven days, as well as 4,999 new hospitalizations. 1,456 patients are in intensive care, 17 more than the day before. A record figure since May.
In addition, 54 new deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, establishing the total number of deaths (hospital and Ehpad) at 32,584 since the start of the epidemic.
11% positive tests
Other data communicated by Public Health France: the test positivity rate, which is also increasing, rising to 11%.
To date, 70 departments are in a situation of high vulnerability. A deterioration in the health situation throughout France, which has led the government to move new cities into the maximum alert zone. After Paris, Aix-Marseille and Guadeloupe, the metropolises of Grenoble, Saint-Etienne, Lyon and Lille have also been affected since Saturday by the restrictive measures put in place to limit the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This includes the closure of bars, sports halls, gyms and swimming pools, as well as a restriction in terms of the reception of restaurants and university lecture halls. In these cities, at least 30% of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid-19 patients. The alert threshold of 250 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants has also been crossed. According to JDDToulouse and Montpellier could soon also move into the maximum alert zone.
Athletes mobilize for the reopening of sports halls
For doctors on the front line of the epidemic since March, this situation is worrying. “The incidence rate among the over 65s, which was very low until the beginning of September, is now reaching high thresholdsworries in the JDD Philippe Amouyel, professor of public health at the University Hospital of Lille. However, these are generations that protect themselves. This means that the disease is no longer confined to young people.”
Nevertheless, the Lille works provide some reasons for hope: “The curve of intensive care admissions is rising less quickly in Bordeaux or Marseille, for example, no doubt thanks to our changes in behavior and restrictions, indicates the doctor. If we keep this pace, we would be at 400 admissions per day at the beginning of November and not at 600 or 700 as we had feared. But what we need is for us to come back down!”
An alarming speech which contrasts with a column published this Sunday, October 11 in the JDD. Signed by 90 sports personalities, including Zinédine Zidane, Stéphane Diagana and Marie-Amélie Le Fur, it calls for the reopening of sports halls. “We, professionals in the supervision of physical and sports activity, high-level athletes and health professionals, deplore the stigmatization of places where physical and sports activity is practiced as vectors for the spread of the current pandemic”write the signatories, who denounce “unfounded decisions, on the health, social and economic level” and fear that the closure of sports venues will send a “erroneous, anxiety-provoking message with disastrous consequences”.
