- Visits to emergency rooms or consultations with SOS Médecins for suspected Covid-19 are increasing.
- Upcoming events in France, particularly the Olympic Games, are raising fears of a further rise in cases.
Covid-19 has not disappeared. Public Health France notes an increase in consultations for suspected contamination.Appeals for suspected Covid-19 have continued to increase for eight weeks, specifies the organization in a communicated published on June 11. The increase is increasingly marked, whether for visits to the emergency room (+52%) or to SOS Médecins (+51%), affecting all age groups.”
An increase in suspected Covid-19 cases in all age groups
In total, SOS Médecins recorded 1,507 medical acts linked to a suspicion of Covid-19, between June 3 and 10, compared to 995 the previous week. All the age groups are concerned, but more particularly those over 75 (+ 85% or 66 to 122 acts) and those under 2 (+ 140% or 10 to 24 acts), indicates the document. The level is higher than 2023 and 2021 in adults.” As for the OSCOUR® network, the organization for coordinated emergency surveillance, it has observed an increase in visits to emergency services for all age groups as well. However, adolescents under 15 seem to be more affected: the data shows a 123% increase in their visits to emergency services for suspected Covid-19. According to the figures from this surveillance network, the share of activity linked to Covid-19 “remains modest but has been progressing for eight weeks”.
Olympic Games and elections: a worrying increase in Covid-19 cases
On France Infoinfectious disease specialist Benjamin Davido expresses his concerns about these figures. “In summer, it is not good news to see Covid,” he warned on Monday, June 17 on the air. This specialist works at the Raymon-Poincaré hospital in Garches in Hauts-de-Seine and has seen new hospitalizations linked to the virus since last week. “This remains a relatively low number compared to what we experienced during the pandemic period.”he reassures. But the upcoming deadlines generate fears: “The first is the legislative elections. We will still find ourselves queuing in a somewhat confined manner in polling stations.he points out. Above all, in less than fifty days, we have the Olympic Games..”
Covid-19: masks, distancing and vaccination, reflexes to rediscover
To reduce the risk of spreading cases, he stresses the importance of wearing a mask when experiencing symptoms in order to limit the contamination of other people. While isolation measures are no longer mandatory, theHealth Insurance recalls that he “remains strongly recommended for people who have tested positive for Covid-19, as well as people who have been exposed to a contagious person and are likely to develop the disease, to avoid contact with vulnerable people”.
For the latter, vaccination is strongly recommended. This concerns people over 65, people at risk of severe forms, pregnant women or nursing home residents. A booster dose is necessary if the last infection or vaccine injection was more than three months ago.
