” The cough syrups fatty bronchial thinners and expectorants (based on carbocisteine, acetylcysteine, diacetylcysteine, ambroxol, bromhexine, erdosteine, guaifenesin, sulfogaiacol, terpine) have never demonstrated a real effectiveness in the elimination of secretions, which has been confirmed by the Haute Autorité de santé ”, explains Prof. Jean-Paul Giroud, clinical pharmacologist and member of Acédemie de Médecine. In addition, coughing is a defense reflex of the body which allows the evacuation of infected bronchial secretions; we must therefore respect this mechanism which is an integral part of the healing process.
“Avoid all associations ofcough suppressant or worse, cough suppressants combined with bronchial thinners or respiratory antiseptics. These products offer no advantage over preparations containing only one substance and increase the risk of adverse effects, ”adds the pharmacologist. These syrups indeed combine products of opposite action: the bronchial thinners will, as their name suggests, thin the secretions and therefore increase them, while the cough suppressant will block the cough reflex essential to evacuate these secretions.
