The American Society of Plastic Surgeons just released Plastic Surgery Trends Among Americans. On the podium: breast augmentation, liposuction and facial operations.
18 million. This is the number of people in the United States last year who had surgery or minimally invasive cosmetic procedures to improve their physical appearance.
This digit, unveiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows that cosmetic surgery is attracting more and more Americans. 250,000 additional people thus spent on billiards in 2018 compared to 2017. A trend that has been on the rise for five years.
Breast augmentation, the most popular operation
The SSPA has unveiled the ranking of the five most popular operations by Americans in 2018. In first place is breast augmentation with 313,735 procedures. This is followed by liposuction (258,558 procedures), rhinoplasty (213,780 procedures), eyelid surgery (206,529 operations) and abdominoplasty (130,081 procedures).
Although breast augmentation and liposuction have increased by 4 and 5% respectively compared to 2017, facial operations have slightly decreased, notes the SSPA.
The other trend emerging from these statistics is Americans’ growing interest in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. Firstly Botox injections, up 3% compared to 2017, followed by hyaluronic acid injections (+2%) and chemical peels (+1%).
For Alan Matarasso, president of the SSPA, the slight decrease in people having undergone facial surgery is probably due to the emergence of alternative options such as non-surgical nose reshaping and injections into the pockets located at the level of the nose. lower eyelids. Additionally, it is now possible for surgeons to perform specialized procedures for different areas of the face and neck without performing a full face lift. As for liposuction, it can be enough in one treatment “to redefine problem areas. A plastic surgeon can treat multiple areas – and larger areas – in one procedure,” says Dr. Matarasso.
Surgery to please yourself
What motivates people who opt for cosmetic surgery today? Last July, an Ifop poll carried out in partnership with Bonheur et Santé with a sample of 1,317 women, looked precisely at the reasons why women in particular had recourse to plastic surgery.
The good news is that the eyes of others and societal pressure seem to play less and less in their decision. If they decide to have more beautiful breasts, to have their hair removed, or to have hyaluronic acid injections, it is above all to please themselves more (68% of respondents). 55% of the women surveyed explained that they had recourse to cosmetic surgery to put an end to a physical complex, while 13% wanted to preserve their youth. Only 6% of respondents said they went under the knife to be more comfortable in their professional environment, 5% to please their partner and 2% because they feel obliged to look young in today’s society.
Another cliché undermined by the survey: that according to which it is “mature” women who have recourse to cosmetic surgery. On the contrary, all age groups are concerned: 9% of those under 35 and 11% for those aged 35 and over.
