Patients infected with the coronavirus suffer from an acute respiratory infection which is accompanied by kidney failure.
The “new” coronavirus has just hit France. A first French case of acute respiratory infection caused by this virus close to SARS has in fact been confirmed in a 65-year-old person returning from the United Arab Emirates. The announcement was made on Wednesday May 8 by the Ministry of Health. “This is the first and only confirmed case in France to date,” said Marisol Touraine, Minister of Health. While in 2003, a virus close to SARS killed more than 800 people around the world, it has so far killed 18 people. why actor takes stock of the clinical picture of victims.
Coronaviruses are part of a large family of viruses that can cause a wide range of illnesses. People suffering from this “new” coronavirus (nCoV) presented the symptoms an acute and severe respiratory infection with fever, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. But the peculiarity of this virus is that it also triggers rapid kidney failure. Confirmation of infection requires respiratory swabs. However, for researchers, this nCoV still remains an enigma, in several of its aspects. It is true that the the current strain had never before been detected in a human being.
But the small number of notified cases provides little information on the origin of the contamination, the modes of transmission, the seriousness and the clinical consequences of such an infection. Data available to date indicate possible human-to-human transmission of the virus. On the other hand, several elements plead in favor of a relatively low contagiousness. Indeed, the number of confirmed cases remains limited according to information from the surveillance system put in place in several countries for several months.
Only one certainty, most cases have stayed, before the occurrence of symptoms, in one of the countries of the Arabian Peninsula or in neighboring countries. This geographic area is therefore more particularly exposed to this risk.
At present, neither the WHO nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advise against certain trips. No trade restrictions were recommended. Finally, the health authorities do not recommend any vaccine for the moment.
