The Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, made it clear that it was important not to take anti-inflammatories in the event of symptoms of coronavirus. Is aspirin one of them?
- You should not take aspirin in case of Covid-19
- This medicine, like all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can make coronavirus infection worse.
Taking anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, cortisone, etc.) would be a “infection aggravation factor” in case of coronavirus, alerted the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran. “In case of fever, take paracetamol”he advised, following which the sale of paracetamol was supervised in order to avoid any risk of shortage.
Aspirin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
According to the website PlanetoscopeIaspirin is the drug whose world production is the highest since it reaches 40,000 tons per year, for 80 billion tablets. In France, approximately 321.2 million units of aspirin are absorbed each year. Often self-medicating. So can we take it in case of symptoms of Covid-19? The answer is no.
Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory non-steroidal, like Advil, Spedifen, Antarène, Nurofen, or even Spifen, which have an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and antiplatelet effect. They are classified as level I analgesics, in the classification of the World Health Organization (WHO) which includes 3 levels.
By acting on the inflammation, they could numb the signs of aggravation and delay your treatment. That is why it is better to take paracetamol. Be careful, however, to respect the dosage of paracetamol and not to consume alcohol during the treatment.
The usual dosage of paracetamol is:
– For children with a weight of 27 to 40 kg (approximately 8 to 13 years), the dosage is 1 capsule of 500 mg per dose, to be renewed if necessary after 6 hours, without exceeding 4 capsules per day.
– For children with a weight of 41 to 50 kg (approximately 12 to 15 years), the dosage is 1 capsule of 500 mg per dose, to be renewed if necessary after 4 hours, without exceeding 6 capsules per day.
– For adults and children who weigh more than 50 kg (from about 15 years old):
– The usual dosage is 1 or 2 capsules of 500 mg per dose (depending on the intensity of the pain), to be renewed if necessary after a minimum of 4 hours.
“The dosage of paracetamol depends on the weight of the child; the ages are mentioned for information, specify well the notice. If you do not know the weight of the child, you must weigh in order to give him the most appropriate dose. Paracetamol exists in many dosages, allowing the treatment to be adapted to the weight of each child. The recommended daily dose of paracetamol depends on the weight of the child: it is approximately 60 mg/kg per dayto be divided into 4 or 6 doses, i.e. approximately 15 mg/kg every 6 hours or 10 mg/kg every 4 hours.”
