The father infected with covid-19
“Again, we are in a position where we could lose our baby girl if she doesn’t keep fighting.laments his mother on Facebook. Please keep Erin in your prayers, we can’t lose her to this virus she’s fought too hard.”
Erin’s coming into the world was punctuated with serious problems, since the little one suffered “open heart surgery, congenital heart disease, collapsed lung, kidney failure, RSV, tracheomalacia, bronchomalacia.” Only his mother, Emma, 29, was allowed to stay by his bedside, his father having shown symptoms of Covid-19 as well. He was sent home to be confined.
“If I start having symptoms myself, I will be taken to another hospital and Erin will be left here alone.Emma worries. However, the situation turns out to be difficult for the dad too: “SIf my child dies now, I won’t be allowed near him as I have to stay in home confinement. I will not be allowed to go to the hospital”he worries for his part. The parents remain confident and believe in the strength of their little Erin: “She’s been so strong in the past, we think she will be today.”
Covid-19 in children
So As previously thought adolescents and children asymptomatic or prone to mild symptoms of covid-19, some cases are exceptions to the rule. 1er april lhe governor of Connecticut (United States) announced the death of a six-week-old baby infected with Covid-19.
A Chinese study of 2,143 children (731 confirmed cases) and published in the journal Pediatrics confirms the trend that forms of severe infection are rarer in young people, but not impossible. Ninety-four children were asymptomatic. In 94% of cases, the disease was mild (from asymptomatic to moderate). “Among the 112 severe cases (respiratory distress with oxygen saturation <92%), 60% were under 5 years old and 30% under 1 year old and among the 13 critical cases (ARDS and/or organ failures) 7 were less than 1 year old. A 14-year-old child died. There are no data on possible comorbidities in children”details the French Society of Pediatrics.
A study conducted in Italy also revealed that out of nearly 58,000 cases, only 597 were children and adolescents under the age of 18 (1%) and their hospitalization rate was 11% (17.5% among those under 1 year and 7% for those over 7 years old).
