Available since April 2015, OC Sensor®, new screening test of colorectal cancer replaces Hémoccult®, used since the 1980s. Free, this immunological test being generalized, is easier to use than the old one and should lead more people to get tested.
Screening for colorectal cancer: those aged 50-74
The test is for adults aged 50 to 74 without any symptoms or particular personal and family history. Every two years, these people receive a letter inviting them to withdraw a screening test from their attending physician, during a consultation. “The test is to be carried out at home for several days”, explains Health Insurance.
Note that the people at risk, either because of personal or family antecedents, or of genetic disease, benefit from a particular surveillance.
Colorectal cancer: more precise screening
The immunological test is presented as much simpler and more precise. Completed the six stool samples: one is now sufficient.
Moreover, while the reading of the old test was colorimetric, that of the new one is robotic. Precancerous lesions could even be detected with the new test.
Objective: 50% participation in screening
So much progress that should push those concerned to get tested. Until then, the rate of participation screening hardly exceeded 30%. The objective with the new test is to achieve between 45 and 50% participation and reduce mortality from colon or rectal cancer by 15%.
Colorectal cancer is responsible for 17,000 deaths and 40,000 new cases each year. It is ranked third among most frequent cancers in France (second for women and third for men). However, when taken on time, it can be cured in 9 out of 10 cases.
