American researchers have compared the percentage and distribution of body fat in coffee drinkers compared to non-drinkers. Regular consumers are doing well by staying in shape.
- Consuming coffee would not only be good against cardiovascular diseases but would also prevent the accumulation of fat
- A thesis that applies especially to women between the ages of 20-44 who consume between 2 and 3 cups daily and those aged 45-69 who consume more than 4 cups
Good health to coffee drinkers! A study published on May 3 in The Journal of nutrition, states that the more coffee a woman drinks, the less fat she stores in her body or in her abdomen. A rule that does not seem to hold true for gentlemen. Previous studies had already shown that moderate coffee consumption – 2 to 3 cups a day – reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems and overall weight-related mortality. “These potential health effects are largely attributed to the bioactive compounds in coffee.ensures a physician from the American Nutrition Society. Coffee consumption has been postulated to increase metabolic rate, thereby increasing energy expenditure. However, associations between coffee consumption and obesity have so far not differentiated between changes in fat mass and lean mass.“
To differentiate between these two types of masses – fat under the skin and around organs and lean which is water, muscle and organs – scientists at the University of Washington School of Medicine United) used a tool called l‘dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This quantitative imaging technique makes it possible to differentiate these two masses and to visualize them in the human body while giving off very little irradiation.
Coffee, female slimming ally?
To reach this positive conclusion for female coffee drinkers, the scientists used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database conducted in the United States from the 2003-2004 and 2005 waves. -2006. They then selected participants aged 20 to 69 and divided them into 6 different groups according to their declaration of coffee consumption – with or without caffeine – during the food frequency questionnaire: group 1 “no consumption of coffee”, group 2 “no to 1/4 cup per day”, group 3 “between 1/4 and 1 cup per day”, group 4 “1 cup per day”, group 5 “2 to 3 cups per day” and group 6 “more than 4 cups a day”.
After refining the results according to the age of the person, they compared these groups with each other according to the percentages of abdominal and overall fat observed via the DXA. There, they noticed the correlation between the number of cups drunk per day with the decrease in the percentage of total body fat and abdominal fat, only in women. According to the researchers, it seems that those who hold their line the best are the 20-44 year olds who consume between 2 and 3 cups a day, and the 45-69 year olds who drink more than 4 cups daily. This virtuous relationship between fat loss and coffee is not significant in men. However, the study notes a slight decrease in the percentage of overall and abdominal fat between 20-44 year olds between 2 and 3 cups a day and those who never drink it.
