Unlike the Toyota Aygo, the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 will disappear from the catalog at the end of 2021 and will not have immediate succession. The retirement began in April with the discontinuation of the three-door version while production of the 5-door will stop in December 2021.
Marketed since 2014, The Citroën C1, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo triplet will bow out in April 2021 for the three-door version and in the course of 2022 for the five-door version, knowing that production will end in December 2021. But their future will differ depending on their coat of arms. As we revealed at the beginning of January, the Japanese city car will be replaced in early 2022 by a third generation, derived from the Yaris, and which should be presented before the summer of 2021.
The future will be electric
On the other hand, the two Frenchmen will not have an immediate follow-up since the PSA group has sold Toyota its shares in the Czech factory in Kolin which has been since 1er January was renamed TMMCZ (Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic) instead of TCPA. A decision which can in particular be explained by the fact that the new Aygo will only be offered in thermal version. Questioned at the beginning of January, Jean-Philippe Imparato confirmed that the Peugeot 108 will not have a sequel since the future of city cars in the A segment goes through electrics.

Peugeot boss considers that the PSA group does not have a technical platform on the shelf to develop a small electric and especially that the economic equation (cost price and cost of the battery) is not fulfilled. Adding that by adding the costs of electricity, connectivity, EuroNCAP crash tests and other regulations, the initial 10,000 € turns into 30,000 €. Consequently, the 208, in its entry-level Access and Like versions, will replace the 108 in the catalog pending the future e-1008 in 2025. For its part, Citroën has the AMI while the future C3 (2023) will have two so-called “eco” electric versions with attractive positioning.
Ongoing reflections
If the technical solution is not on the table today, PSA is considering mobility objects for the future. Especially since Stellantis will reshuffle the cards within the ranges. For now, the position would be to leave the A segment to the electric Fiat 500 (from € 24,500). But the new American-European group will not leave the field open to Volkswagen, which is working on an electric ID1 accessible at around € 20,000. Made in Spain, it will also be available at Seat and Skoda in 2025.
