Each year in France, the Cervical cancer (CCU) affects around 3,000 women. The number of deaths from this cancer is estimated at nearly 1,100 per year. It therefore remains murderous, and yet it is “preventable”. the papillomavirus vaccine is one of the prevention methods, the smear is another.
It is recommended that women aged 25 to 65 have at least one smear every three years. However, 40% of them have not done so in the past three years.
This is why the National Cancer Institute and Public Health France recommend, in the last Weekly epidemiological bulletin (BEH) the implementation of generalized screening.
To support their recommendations, the health authorities present the results, “rather encouraging” of a pilot operation carried out in 13 departments.
12% more women could be screened
– The overall screening coverage rate has been improved by 12 points, reaching 62% of the target population. “Organized screening has complemented spontaneous screening and thus makes it possible to reach women who escape screening”.
– Screening made it possible to detect numerous lesions of varying severity.
“This strategy reduces the incidence of cervical cancer from 13 to 26% depending on the scenario, and results in gains in life expectancy” can we read in the BEH.
