Suffering from a congenital cataract, little Theo Bennett had to wait until he was 7 months old to see his parents distinctly, after having been operated on and given a pair of glasses. His parents filmed this magical moment.
The moment he first saw the world, 7-month-old Briton Theo Bennett will probably not remember. However, he will remain forever etched in the minds of his parents.
A decrease in visual acuity
Little Theo was indeed born with a congenital cataract, an eye disease affecting the vision of both eyes. Until his operation, Theo saw blurry and had difficulty distinguishing shapes, light and colours. In question: a defect in the crystalline lens, a lens that allows the passage of light rays and projects the image of the object viewed on the central part of the retina. In the event of a cataract, the lens gradually becomes opaque, which lowers visual acuity.
Asked by the DailyMailLois, Theo’s 35-year-old mother, says she detected the eye disorder her son suffered from when he was 6 months old.
A few weeks after the diagnosis was made, the little boy underwent surgery to remove his defective lenses and replace them with artificial lenses. The operation, which lasted five hours, took place successfully last October.
Two weeks later, he was fitted with a pair of corrective glasses. It was at this moment that his dad, Joseph, 37, filmed him. In this video, we can see little Theo apprehend the world for the first time and discover with clarity the face of his father.
“When he put the glasses on he looked at me with a big smile and you could see him looking around, it melts your heart because you think, ‘he can see you now’,” his father said. “It was amazing, we took him for a walk that afternoon and it was obvious he was observing the world around him like he never had before.
Today Theo is 18 months old and healthy. He underwent a new operation in June to clean the cells stuck to the artificial lenses. “Now we have this little boy running around the living room chasing the kittens and when we go to the park he loves the slide.”
