For the general population, a moderate consumption of wine, in particular red wine, would have certain health benefits (cognitive functions, hearing, etc.), in particular thanks to the presence of resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant. But for seniors, it would be quite the opposite and the daily consumption of wine would have deleterious effects on the heart according to the conclusions of a study by the Harvard medical school (United States) published in the journal Scientific Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging.
According to the researchers, the increasing alcohol intake is associated with an increase in the systolic (contractions of the heart) and diastolic (relaxation of the heart after contractions) diameter of the left ventricle, as well as a larger atrial diameter.
Male study participants saw the mass of their left ventricles increase, especially beyond 2 drinks a day or more than 14 weekly alcoholic drinks. In women, changes in heart function have been seen from more than one drink daily.
The study was carried out on 4,466 men and women, whose average age was 75 years.
